Meatless Monday for the New Year

Looking for a good New Years Resolution?  Here’s mine.  I am going to officially follow the advice of the Meatless Mondays movement and one day a week, simply not eat meat.  Makes complete sense to me that here in the land of the Big Mac, if every person cut down their meat intake by 15% by going meatless one day a week, our nation— nay the whole planet— would be a better, healthier place.

If you are wondering about the Meatless Monday movement, check out their website here. A few elderly folks may remember ” meatless mondays” from  WWII when meat was rationed.  They are nothing new.  What is new is an interactive website with tips, info, recipes and much more to make it all easy as, er ahem, “pie.”

Here’s a short mission statement from the website to whet your appetite.

Meatless Monday is a non-profit initiative of The Monday Campaigns, in association with the Johns Hopkins’ Bloomberg School of Public Health. We provide the information and recipes you need to start each week with healthy, environmentally friendly meat-free alternatives. Our goal is to help you reduce your meat consumption by 15% in order to improve your personal health and the health of the planet.

Presidents Wilson, Truman and Roosevelt galvanized the nation with voluntary meatless days during both world wars. Our intention is to revitalize this American tradition. We’re spearheading a broad-based, grassroots movement that spans all borders and demographic groups. By cutting out meat once a week, we can improve our health, reduce our carbon footprint and lead the world in the race to reduce climate change.

No part of me can or wants to go totally lacto veggie or ( God forbid) Vegan.  I’m a moderation in all things kinda girl, and I am not morally opposed to meat.  Noibody loves a good steak more than I, but Meatless Monday  I can do.. especially with the help of an interactive website that gives me everything I need to make it easy. I’m in….

How about you?
