The Lesson
she rubs the waves in his close-cropped head
so much, she wishes his hair
was hers
he’s writing his a b c’s
as beethoven plays in the coffeehouse
this is where prodigies
are born
she helps him read a story
third grade didn’t seem
long ago for
her
he opens his books
as if they were gifts
she guides his hands to write
as the sonata takes wings and
builds to a crescendo
this is not a tutoring session:
but dr. king’s dream coming true
but really, they are creating possibilities
