Drag Me To Hell

I rented this movie from Netflix because I heard it was pretty good for a horror flick, and actually, it is.

The important words in that sentence are “for a horror flick”. I really want to stress that.

The lead character is a sweet-faced young female loan officer at a bank who is vying for a promotion to assistant manager. Her competitor is is one of those backstabbing toadies who populate every corporate environment; a guy whose own mother doesn’t trust him, and for good reason.

When an elderly woman in gypsy dress begs for an extension on her very overdue mortgage, this young woman caves in to pressure from her boss to “make the hard choices” and says no.

Naturally the old woman puts a curse on her. (What use is it to be a gypsy if you can’t put curses on snippy bank employees?) For three days the loan officer will be haunted by a demonic spirit called the Lammia, and on the morning of the fourth day it will literally drag her to hell.

It’s what the Lammia does. It doesn’t make the rules. It just enforces them.

Anyway, there are some great moments and some weird, dumb moments.

Weird dumb moment: Why does this gypsy woman have rotten false teeth? Don’t most people go for false teeth that are more attractive than their original ones?

Great moment: About to be dragged to hell by the gargantuan demonic spirit during a seance meant to dispel the thing, the sweet-faced loan officer protests for the umpteenth time, “I told you it wasn’t me, it was my manager!”

Well, having worked in a bank I know how all of them feel. Truly.

But if someone has to be dragged to hell, can’t it be Ben Bernanke or Tim Geithner?

It’s always us little people who pay.

Some things never change.

My sentiments exactly.

I can understand about the rotten false teeth, though. Rotten teeth are creepy, and false teeth are kind of creepy, too. But ROTTEN FALSE teeth? OMG

Thanks PG

I dunno-- this is not one I every would have picked on my own( I'm horror flick phobic) but honestly, your review is sooo good I'm off to Netflix to cue it up..... the idea of being dragged off to hell by a lammia is kind of cool--a in any case, I gotta see it. BTW I agree totally about Bernanke and Geithner-- the big boys never suffer.

Hi Tom! Yes, normally not my kind of movie but sort of fun in a weird way. :) (Not counting the false teeth._

Watching the preview you included made me want popcorn with butter and a large cola beverage, in a bad way. I've seen the previews before but wasn't ever really sure if it would be worth watching before I got to other films that looked so much better. But I suppose I'm going to give it a shot. I have to say some of the scenes do seem enticing. I'll keep in mind it's a "horror flick" =).

Michelle, it's pretty dumb, but I thought it had campy, fun moments. I mentioned it to my kids on Christmas Day and they all wailed, "I HATE that movie!" They didn't like it at all. Maybe I have a darker sense of humor from working at the bank... lol!

But any excuse for popcorn is a good thing in my book. :)

Any excuse indeed! Well, I have quite a dark sense of humor. Bizarre actually, so I'm going to give it a try. I put it on my Blockbuster list.
