I have always loved pure Maple syrup, so imagine my excitement when one of my favorite blogs, Heroin and Cornflakes, featured a post about the potential health benefits of Canadian Maple syrup. I read it this morning as I was consuming my boring bowl of shredded wheat with non fat milk .
It seems a team of Researchers at the University of Rhode Island have identified 54 compounds in maple syrup from Canada with antioxidant activity and potential health benefits. In laboratory studies, they acted as anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory agents. The findings were announced at the April 30th meeting of the American Chemical Society in Anaheim, CA
For my money this is great news. On French toast, pancakes, and even ice cream— I am going to be eating more maple syrup and feeling less guilt now that I know it is possibly a champion super food and a source of sweetness that is good for me. Hooray!
